TOOLS FOR DIRECTING, CONTROLLING AND MEASURING PERFORMANCE

"CIT" - the implementation tool

ABSTRACT
The implementation of IT Governance implies building capability to better direct, control and measure performance. CobiT, ITIL, ISO17799, ISO20000 and ISO27001 are often the preferred management frameworks to provide guidance about building capability. However, these frameworks first need to be understood, then interpreted, tailored to specific organisational needs, communicated and tracked through to completion. Key to success is being able to:
  • Direct the improvement activities.
  • Control the implementation
  • Regularly measure success at the process level, against business goals.

THE CHALLENGE
Process improvement is complex. Multiple activities require attention and some need to be performed in a pre-defined sequence whilst others are performed in parallel. The administrative burden is considerable even in small projects. Administration, assignment of tasks, definition of requirements, communication of requirements, tracking of progress are all essential to managing the implementation of IT governance.
  • Process ownership, assignment of process roles and responsibilities.
  • Repeatable processes with clear goals.
  • Operational performance and information quality measures.
  • Rationalisation of unnecessary complexity.

HOW THIS TOOL WILL HELP
"CIT" is a Risk-focused, Controls-based and Capability-driven tool that automates the definition of processes and provides a planning and management capability to increase efficiency and visibility of progress in individual processes across multiple locations.
  • Provide a pre-defined order for process improvements
  • Establish accountability
  • Measure progress towards attaining business goals.

"GMETRICS" - the scorecard for IT Governance

ABSTRACT
Delivering value and achieving compliance objectives is hugely dependent on a good IT governance framework that is capable of directing the activities within IT processes, controlling execution and measuring success.
  • Few companies have developed the organiational maturity to effectively direct and control IT activities.
  • Most organisations find themselves fire-fighting at the operational level.
  • Strategic objectives are often out of focus due to heavy dependence on people skills alone for success.

THE CHALLENGE
Leadership, organisation structure, relationships and IT processes that will enable the business to achieve its goals.
  • Leadership that is externally focused and respected by the business leaders.
  • Organisational structures that establish accountability at the right levels of authority.
  • Designated process ownership, definition and goals that are clearly defined and communicated.
  • Outcomes from IT that the business expects.

HOW THIS TOOL WILL HELP
Capability improvement to better direct, control and measure performance.
  • Process knowledge to build capability
  • Solution to effectively manage progress
  • Scorecards to monitor process performance
