A comprehensive definition for IT Governance |
|
IT governance is the board's ability to direct and control the enterprise's use of IT resources in line with strategic goals. Leadership, organisational structure and processes are used to leverage IT resources and drive alignment, the delivery of value, management of risk, optimisation of resources and performance measurement.
The challenge is to address stakeholder expectations when multiple business units "own" and "use" the same set of services and where most applications are "owned" by individual business units that control the budget for design, development, and support. The first step towards better governance is to establish accountability. This requires an examination of the roles and responsibilities within the processes used for decision-making that can impact on the achievement of strategic goals.

IT Governance is boosted by King III - Free Report Download |
|
The South African "King Committee on Corporate Governance" has addressed the issue of corporate governance for information technology for the first time devoting an entire chapter to the subject and keeping IT governance separate from risk management and compliance.
IT governance is defined in the glossary to the King III Code of Governance as “the effective and efficient management of IT resources to facilitate the achievement of corporate objectives”. IT governance is the responsibility of the board and an integral part of corporate governance. The focus is on the governance of management processes (and decisions) relating to the information and communication services used by an organisation.
