COBIT 5 gets the Thumbs Up!

The conclusion from our 3 day COBIT 5 workshops is a definite thumps up for COBIT 5. The CIOs and IT Governance leaders attending these workshops to examine in detail COBIT 5 and compare this to CobiT 4.1 concluded that COBIT 5 is a great step forward. The most significant feature to be identified is the three-tiered IT governance framework.

With a process dedicated to establishing an IT Governance framework and another to establishing a management system for the IT processes, COBIT 5 provides management with the tools they need to implement IT governance within their organisations.

After three days at the COBIT 5 workshops most participants were very clear that their plan would be to switch to COBIT 5 immediately.

CobiT 5 and IT Governance Seminars in London and Orlando

Practical CobiT 5 and IT governance seminars are scheduled for London, UK and Orlando, US in 2012. Based on the new processes definitions of CobiT 5, the principles in ISO 38500 and the ISO 15504 Process Capability Assessment Model, these seminar provide delegates with an understanding of CobiT 5, how to implement IT governance and management processes, measure capability and manage performance.

A common mistake is to confuse IT management processes (APO1) with IT governance practices (EDM 1). ISO 38500, the standard for the corporate governance of IT defines the two as:

  • IT governance: the system by which the current and future use of IT is directed and controlled
  • IT management: the system of controls and processes required to achieve the strategic objectives set by the organisation's governing body.

These seminars (2012) include examples of:

  • Responsibilities of the Board and CIO
  • IT Governance Framework (CobiT EDM1)
  • IT Governance Charter

CobiT 5 is released!

The COBIT 5 Framework and the COBIT 5 Process Reference Guide have been released by ISACA. Visit the ISACA web site to download these documents.

Key features of COBIT 5 are the incorporation of the ISO 38500 model for the corporate governance of IT, a management system and the complete replacement of COBIT Maturity Model with an ISO 15504 aligned COBIT process capability assessment model. The COBIT process descriptions have been modernised and greater emphasis is placed on alignment with IT and Enterprise goals.

To coincide with the release of COBIT 5, the IT Governance Network has revised its Integrated Management System for the implementation of COBIT 5 as well asĀ  a Management System for Information Security (see COBIT APO13).
